Fume Extraction System is a specialized air filtration system designed to remove harmful dust, particles, and other contaminants produced during metal casting and foundry operations. Foundries generate large amounts of dust from processes like molding, sand blasting, metal grinding, and pouring molten metals, all of which can pose serious health risks to workers and affect air quality. A foundry dust collector helps to capture and filter these particles, ensuring the workplace is safe, clean, and compliant with industrial health and safety standards.
Key Components of a Fume Extraction System:

Dust Collection Hood or Inlet: This is placed at or near the dust-generating source, such as the molding station, sand handling area, or grinding operations. It is designed to capture dust particles as they are released into the air. The hoods are designed to efficiently collect dust and fumes at the source to prevent them from spreading throughout the facility.

Ductwork: A network of pipes or ducts that transport the captured dust-laden air from the collection point to the filtration system. The ductwork must be properly sized and designed to minimize air turbulence and energy loss, ensuring that the airflow remains efficient.

Filtration Unit: The filtration system is the core component of a dust collector. It contains various types of filters to capture and remove the dust particles from the air. Common filter types include:

Bag filters: Made from fabric materials, bag filters capture fine dust particles and are widely used in foundry dust collection.

Cartridge filters: These are used for more compact systems, often providing higher filtration efficiency for fine dust.

Cyclone Separators: In some cases, a cyclone separator is used as a pre-filter to remove larger particles before they enter the main filtration system.

Fan/Blower: A fan or blower is used to create suction and maintain airflow, drawing the contaminated air into the system and through the filters. The fan ensures that air passes through the filters and is either recirculated or exhausted outside after filtration.

Dust Disposal System: Once the dust has been captured and filtered, it must be removed from the system. This is often done through a dust bin or hopper that collects the accumulated dust. In some systems, automatic or pneumatic conveyors are used to move the collected dust for proper disposal or recycling.

Cleaning Mechanism: To maintain filter efficiency, the dust collector may include an automatic cleaning system, such as a pulse-jet or shaker mechanism. These systems periodically clean the filters by blowing air through them (pulse-jet) or mechanically shaking them, ensuring that the filters do not clog and continue to operate efficiently.
